Yes, and thanks to the excellent UPS, who provided informative progress updates and an excellent duties payment process, nice and quick with no delay to delivery.
First impressions? Freakin tiny object! So small that I thought Mark from JTW had forgotten to put the camera back in the box! Seriously.
Build quality is top notch, and even with its diminutive size, the controls are easy to access, albeit a bit alien to this former Canon nut. Only one quibble – a small door for audio jacks seems very loose and easy to open, though it doesn’t actually open accidentally. Just seems too sensitive.
Obviously it’s too early to test thoroughly on astro objects, so I’ve just taken some darks at a pretty warm room temp of 22c. So the darks are much worse than I’d expect in cool night air. I’m still very pleased with them, as I did them all at my base testing ISO of 3200. That’s about 5 times my average ISO of the canon 40D. The light picture was taken at the same ISO. IMHO, incredible.
The power of this cam needs to be appreciated, hopefully to be demonstrated on Saturday. The 3 minute dark IS a little bit noisy, but it’s not that bad, esp when you consider that it’s before any cooling modification. What’s more significant to me is that the 3 minute sub at 3200 is equivalent to me imaging with my 40d for 15 minutes! If I tried that with the 40D, the noise would be unbelievably high. In fact here I’ve included a 10 minute dark taken in COOL weather, as a comparison. The canon is far worse at that length. But remember, this is an old Canon camera! I have a friend with a newly modded Canon EOS 6D, we intend on having some direct comparisons for you soon.
Sorrya bout the messy kitchen. Again, this is at ISO3200, manual white balance (the camera is modded for Ha, so without manual white balance, it looks awfully red).
Size comparison – no jokes please!
Focuser attachment. A medium priced E mount to canon T adapter is between the camera and the Takahashi T mount adapter:
Here’s the first flat image I took, pleasing amount of vignetting, should be easy to remove in Pixinsight. Remember, this is a full size sensor:
Ok, some darks. First, 30 seconds at 3200, room temp:
2 mins, probably the cam’s sweetspot uncooled. Equiv of 10 mins of the 40D:
And 3 mins, noise worse but not too shabby really!:
Reality check – a 3 minute dark just taken with the 40D:
I’m off to experiment with live view and wifi options, will report back.
